Social Anxiety is mostly focussed on being around people or groups, often accompanied by a great fear of embarrassing oneself. It can lead to social isolation and loneliness. Other more specific anxiety disorders such as phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are all indicative of excessive anxiety that can have a dramatic impact on a person's life.

Identifying the Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety

  • Fear and worry

  • Nervousness

  • Panic or panic attacks

  • Stress that starts impacting on your sleep, mood, body and relationships

  • A nagging sense of disquiet, foreboding or a sense of impending doom

  • Fretting and feeling that you can’t relax

  • Physical symptoms like a racing heart, clammy hands or digestive issues

  • Obsessing about not so important things that seem big, like germs or what people think

  • Waking up with racing thoughts or worry about the day

  • Difficulty with concentration and remembering things

  • Shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, nightmares or diarrhoea

As some of these symptoms may have a physical origin, it’s always a good idea to consult your GP for a check-up, and if you both agree it’s psychological, you may want to ask for a referral to a psychologist for anxiety treatment.
