TAKING THE LEAP   It takes courage to say “this is it, I need help”. Sometimes a life crisis precipitates the decision, sometimes a loved one or your doctor suggests it, sometimes you’ve been thinking about it a long time and finally feel ready. Some of us even feel guilty about talking just about ourselves to someone when we are so busy taking care of others.

 

Whatever brought you to the point of taking the leap, you probably realised that good selfcare is important, that your happiness and wellness matter, and that sometimes it’s okay to ask for help from a professionally trained person who specialises in exactly what you need.

Choosing the right Therapist for YOU

It is important that you feel a sense of ownership for your therapeutic journey, and that starts with choosing the right professional to talk to, somebody who has the skills, experience, qualifications and personality that you need. By all means explore the recommendations of your GP or a loved one whose opinion you trust. Doing a bit of homework is so worthwhile so go online, read the profiles of the Psychologist, and see who you feel a resonance with.

Did you know that you don’t have to see the Psychologist on the Mental Health Care Plan prepared for you? If you trust your doctor, chances are they received good feedback about that therapist. However, feel free to change if you would feel more comfortable with another practitioner. At Kensington Psychology & Well-Being, we have a variety of therapists available who are all very well trained, value kindness, compassion and helping others, and work to a very high standard. Your first time at our Adelaide Psychologist Practice

Please arrive about 15 minutes early to complete a bit of paperwork. Like all practitioners, we are bound by strict rules of confidentiality, and you can be assured that all your information will be dealt with in a confidential and respectful manner.

At our practice, your Private Insurance or Medicare rebate can be processed on the spot for you so that your rebates are deposited immediately into your nominated account.

Your Psychologist will come and greet you at Reception, or if it is a Telehealth session, from the virtual waiting room. Your time is valuable, and we do our very best not to keep you waiting long.

What happens in a Psychologist Session?

Of course your Psychologist is a human being, just like you are. What sets therapy apart from a regular conversation with a friend is that the time is yours and the focus is on what is relevant and helpful to you. Furthermore, Psychologists are professional people who are trained to help with psychological difficulties like depression, anxiety, interpersonal struggles, stress or trauma.

It is sometimes a great relief to talk to somebody who does not know you and who does not move in your social circles, who will be impartial, non-judgemental, and compassionate to your experience. You can expect your therapist to be thoughtful, considerate, and genuinely interested, asking you questions to truly understand you and what troubles you, and what you would like to attain through your therapeutic journey. Your background and the people in your life, your work or studies, and what is important to you, as well as how your challenges affect you uniquely as a person will likely also be discussed.

At the end of your session, the aim is for your therapist to have a good idea of the challenges you face, your goals in therapy, and the evidence-based treatment that would most likely be of help to you. Sometimes you might be given some suggestions of strategies to try in between sessions.

After your session

Please make your way to Reception where your next appointment times will be booked at a time that suits you. It’s a good idea to put a reminder in your phone so you won’t forget. To help, we will also send an SMS a day or two before your appointment.  Please help us by giving us notice of more than 24 hours before your next session time if you can’t make it, so that another person may be helped in that time.
